In Wodong Village on the beautiful island of Flores in Indonesia, 27 kms east of Maumere, and nestled right at the water’s edge sits the Sleepy Lagoon. It is the ‘big sister’ to Lena House, owned by Didakus and Esy.
Built traditionally from coconut wood, bamboo and grass roof, it’s the perfect artist retreat or getaway holiday.
The house is simple but comfortable and very spacious for four people. It sits right on a beautiful calm bay with gorgeous views to outer islands.
Lovingly constructed out of local materials, it has a beautiful spacious sense to it. Huge shutters in the main living area open up completely to give a sense of merging with the outdoors, and to catch the sea breeze. A wide verandah provides protection from sun and rain, and plenty of space for relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The main bedroom with queen sized bed is downstairs whilst upstairs on the mezzanine level are two single beds. Great views can be enjoyed from two upstairs viewing decks.
The washroom is dual access – it’s an ensuite downstairs with ‘upstairs guest’ entry via the kitchen and south side. The cold water shower is open planned Indonesian ‘mandi’ style but in a discrete setting with lovely view to the garden. The toilet is western style.
Generator power is available at night, backed up by a small 12 volt lighting system.
Bed linen (including mosquito nets) and shower towels are supplied, and changed once per week or earlier upon request.
Short term guests have full access to the house, (including laundry with twin tub washing machine) and partial access to the kitchen, for tea, coffee and snacks (starter pack of tea, coffee, sugar and powdered milk provided). Meals can be taken at Lena House’s restaurant, or delivered to Sleepy Lagoon. Full kitchen access is available to longer term guests upon negotiation (email us for further information). Drinking water can be purchased in bulk from Lena House (approx US$3 for 18 litres).
Wi-fi is available at Lena 1 house (300 metres up beach) but we recommend you buy Indonesian SIM card with data topup (cards are approx US$9 – 3gig data for approx US$15). Best to buy nano and micro SIM cards in Bali as not readily available on Flores.
Wodong Village is a small community of mainly Indonesian locals, most of whom make their living fishing or growing crops such as rice or coconuts.
There’s a few tourist bungalows and hotels in the vicinity but the island is only just starting to open to tourism. This is not the place to come if you are looking for night life, television, gourmet catering, or lots of shopping! But it IS the place to come if you want peace and quiet, and to experience life amongst the friendly happy local people.
The Sleepy Lagoon is secluded from the main road, and access is via Lena House 1, which is approx 300 metre walk at low tide, or short trip across the bay by boat (a charming way to arrive!)
Once here, you can hire motorbikes through Lena House to get around, or catch a local bemo (bus) which comes at regular intervals along the main road. For longer trips, car and driver can be arranged.
