Stunning views and a perfect shape make Gunung Ebulobo (Mt. Ebulobo) in Nagekeo district one of the most memorable and picturesque volcanoes in Indonesia.

Visitors are recommended to arrange this trip from from Flores Explore staff so you can organize a trekking guide, so that you can see the sunrise from the summit.

The trail starts in Molakoli, a small traditional village. The path follows agricultural fields and allows your body to prepare for the ensuing very steep climb to the top. On Gunung Ebulobo everything seems to happen abruptly. After less than 30 minutes of easy hiking, at 1034 m the mountain trail suddenly gets very steep. You are still surrounded by forest here, and the rarely used path offers plenty of solid grip. Most of this section of the trail is covered with pine needles. The trek to the top usually takes between 2 to 4 hours.

Once at the top, the views are breathtaking. The colors of the sunrise are intense and the panoramic views are amazing, with mountain ranges on one side, the ocean to the south, and the perfectly shaped cone of Gunung Inerie to the east. The final section with volcanic rocks might be slippery so, some extra care is needed. Once you reach the summit you can circle the crater, which takes about 20 minutes. But as abruptly as the landscape changes on Ebulobo, so does the weather. It can happen that one minute you enjoy a magnificent sunrise, next minute you are surrounded by thick fog, which will clear again without a trace some time later.

Poco Ranaka is part of a volcanic chain in the centre of Manggarai. The volcano is still very active. In 1987, a lava dome started growing on its flank, which was aptly named Anak Ranaka – child of Ranaka. Today, Poco Ranaka is an integrated part of Taman Wisata Alam Ruteng, which aims to promote conservation and tourism.

At the summit of Poco Ranaka there is a chapel, which is a popular place of pilgrimage among the locals. A paved road has been built some time ago but it is in a desolate condition and, even though you could go all the way to the chapel by motorbike, it is better and much nicer to walk. Nice views will open up along the trail. On the top, the chapel welcomes you. The trail ends at 2286 meters above sea level. Unfortunately, the view from the top is obscured by tall, thick bushes.

Nevertheless, this easy hike is a beautiful adventure with many splendid views on the way up; and Ranaka is a fantastic bird watching spot with species like the changeable hawk-eagle, the bare-throated whistler, the chestnut-backed thrush, and the Flores minivet. The endemic Wallace’s hanging parrot has been documented but some of the other endemics might be found here as well.

If you are around city of Bajawa, one of the must-go nature places to visit is the Ogi Waterfall in Faobata village. Motorbike riding would make it much more interesting and adventurous as the air’s atmosphere along the curvy road will create a stunning refreshment and also many photostop places on the way there, one of them may show you the boasting Ebulobo volcano from the distance.

It is around 7 kilometers away to the east side of Bajawa city to get here. The waterfall lies very quite near with the road, and you need to start to walk through the dirt path of ricefields and concrete lines alongside the sewer. Around another 900 meters walking from the first point to walk of the greenish rice field lead you toward the waterfall. During the day you would encounter some friendly local farmers with their planting activities, and it would be one of the pleasant feeling before the waterfall.

Soon as you close to the waterfall, more roaring sound of the abundant water discharge would be heard. A mass of water comes out from a slit of a line of a hill, then falls down massively in persistent speed, creating a gust over the air, blowing off water particles everywhere. In one full year, the water discharge has been massive and persistent debit of water, including in the beginning of the dry season. That is why the local government assembled a microhydro electricity power processor next to the waterfall to support the electricity consumption for the city. There is also an assembled iron staircase of a same height of the waterfall which is used for monitoring the water discharge, however it is strongly advisable not to climb them as it is in a quite steep degrees, rusty, and slippery condition. Just cover your lens and take a distance if you would like to take a picture of this tough waterfall.

Gunung Iya or Mt. Iya (627m) is a spectacular volcano situated on Ende’s peninsula. Even though it is not the highest in Flores but once you’re up there and standing at the edge of those sheer cliffs that drops off to the sea, it feels as if you could touch the clouds.

To climb Mt. Iya visitors are advice to hire local guide to get to the peak. The sandy ground is peppered with ditches and holes overgrown with waist-high grass. The guide will also be able to show you a nice spot from which you have an excellent view of the smoking cliffs of Iya’s crater, and avoid getting lost that could lead you facing deep ravines and cliffs.

To climb Mt. Iya visitors are advised to hire a local guide (guiding fee is around IDR 100,000 – 150,000) to get to the peak. Visitors wishing to climb this mountain can start from Rate village, 4 km south of Ende, or pay an IDR 10,000-ride by Ojek (motorbike taxi) to get there. A dusty road first leads and this somewhat unpleasant experience will soon be forgotten as you climb over a sandy ledge and enter the world of Mount Iya. All the way up you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Ende town landscape, the adjacent Gunung Meja (Mount Table, and it can easily be seen why it was given that name), Savu Sea, and Ende Island.

After around 2 hours trek, you will reach the highest point of the volcano where an excellent view opens up before you. The cliffs look dramatic with their sulphurous fumaroles and bright yellow sulphur deposits. Another interesting fact is the whole mountain is actually hollow!

Mystical Myth
Mount Iya is sacred for the local people, for the myth said; it is a home for spirits and mythical creatures, guardians of the mountain. If you happen to come across one of those otherworldly creatures, do not call it or shout, just watch, for it is their mountain home and we are not supposed to disturb them.

Furthermore, visitors to the mountain should not say out loud if they are thirsty or hungry. And if they do, they should drink or eat right away. The spirits can get upset if someone says they’re thirsty and then don’t drink. The locals believe that in the period between you say it and don’t actually drink, injuries and other misfortunes may happen.

Many people are surprised to find out that world-famous Komodo National Park is comprised of more than just Komodo Island. In fact, Rinca Island, the second largest island in the park, actually has more dragons than Komodo Island. However, visitors to Rinca Island can also see other wild animals, such as water buffalo, wild boar, horses, Timor deer and macaques. There is also great diversity of birds.

There are also three highly venomous snakes to watch out for: the green pit viper, Russel’s viper, and a species of spitting cobra.

The 6 kilometer-long trek usually takes about four hours and you will travel through dry savanna, with a few scattered trees and great numbers of Lontar palms.

On the trek, you will arrive at a natural spring which is a watering hole for animals. You will also pass the area where wild horses frequently graze, as well as herds of Timor deer. After about 3 kilometers you will climb the little hill of Golo Konde or Monkey Mountain where you can enjoy fantastic views of the scenery and animals in the distance.

Don’t forget to bring your binoculars. The way back will lead through a valley with waist-high grass and to a river where water buffalo bathe and cool themselves. As this trail comes closer to the popular tourist trails, there’s a good chance you will see more Komodo dragons.

All in all, this trek offers some memorable experiences, beautiful scenery and sights of the unique wild life of Rinca Island.
