Ende is a city in Flores. It mostly serves as the gateway between Flores and Sumba or Kupang. However, Ende is worth a visit in its own right. Being the biggest city in Flores, boasting both a university and a hospital, it has a middle class and curious young people with good English skills.
Ikhlas Hotel is A wonderful budget hotel close to the airport. The staff is very helpful, and can arrange all your onwards travel. Surprisingly, the cheapest rooms are the best. Choose between shared/private bathroom and fan or a/c. Rates includes a simple breakfast (Coffee and toast or perhaps a sweet bun). The restaurant has great, fresh, cheap food – if only it had a fan
This backpacker standard doesn’t look like much from the outside, but it’s actually a rather large property, with room choices ranging from grungy (and cheap) singles to very nice air-con rooms with garden-facing patios. The better rooms are very clean for a backpacker place, though the cheap rooms are suitably depressing — some more than others, so ask to look around.
For often overpriced Flores, these are great rates. The Hotel Ikhlas also has a common area with a TV and offers quite a few useful travel agent services for both sea and overland travel, making it a good choice for solo travellers hoping to meet others. We didn’t try the restaurant, but we heard it’s serviceable. There’s WiFi on offer — if that’s not fast enough, true digital natives can nip across the street, where an internet cafe-cum-laundromat hosts the best connection in Ende.
It’s close to the airport, and you can easily walk to some of the better area restaurants.
